...and so it begins...

In February, 2010 I was a pseudo-trim, but horribly out of shape 5'11" 168 lb 35 year old man with beautiful infant twin girls and a wonderful, hot-mama wife.  I didn't know how truly out of shape I was or how poor my diet was until I started working at changing both.  And both sucked.

More on that as time goes on.  Today is an epic day.  Today is the first official day of my training plan to run in the 2011 Key Bank Vermont City Marathon (KBVCM) on Memorial Day weekend in Burlington, VT USA.  As of April, 2010, I hadn't run a mile since High School phys-ed class.  In May 2010 I ran a charity 5k.  By October I ran my first 1/2 marathon and repeated again in November, finishing both in just under 1h40m. After finishing my first half (Leaf Peepers, Waterbury, VT), my thought was, "What moron gets to this point and says, 'Yeah, I'd like to turn around and do that again right now!'?"

<raises_hand>

My goal from June of last year has been the 2011 KBVCM.  It's a challenge.  I like to find something I can't do in the present and push myself to be able to do it in the future. That's where the name of this blog comes from.  (Push the envelope. Watch it bend.)  Okay, it really comes from the Tool song Lateralus, but I listened to that album continually during my half marathon training it just kinda stuck as my Mantra.

I'll leave it at for the time being.  My goal is to use this space as a complete training log and keep it relatively active.  I'll blog about diet, training plan, workouts, PT, equipment, technology, etc.  I'm open to questions/comments/suggestions.

So let's do this!

  1. Begins? Sounds like you've already broken the inertia and are living up to my mantra song Defying Gravity -

    "I'm through accepting limits
    'cause someone says they're so
    Some things I cannot change
    But till I try, I'll never know..."

    Guess we're going to need to meet up for a race sometime, someplace fun. Vegas anyone?

    Oh, and FIRST!
